Hospital Bills & Medical Debt

An appendectomy in California, including about two days in the hospital, has an average list charge of $18,000. Nationally, federal data show the median charge for treating a heart attack is more than $20,000." (4/13/2004)

Payment of your hospital bill is your responsibility. After you are discharged from the hospital you usually receive a summary statement of account for your hospital services. You will most likely receive a separate medical bill from your physician and could receive other hospital bills, depending on the services provided.

You should expect each medical provide to charge you seperately from the hospital.
