It wasn't all that long ago that
American's faced great financial crisis. As a nation, we struggle
with debt, and it keeps us from achieving a better life. Debt
Education is here to help you change all that ... just ask!
REAL PEOPLE ... CARING ABOUT REAL
ISSUES
The Scope
Personal debt is on the increase. Americans are finding themselves
increasingly deeper and deeper in debt. The value of good credit
is a growing part of our day-to-day lives. Borrowing money through
loans can be a useful tool to help households smooth their income
over time. Many of us though, have loans or other unsecured credit
we are finding more and more difficult to manage. The amount we
owe on credit cards and other forms of consumer credit is at a
record high. As a nation, we seem to be nation of debtors.
Keep in mind that debt is not the same as over-indebtedness.
Debt only becomes a problem when people cannot afford their repayments.
And when debt does become a problem, it does so at a high cost.
- A cost to the debtor in terms of the financial impact on people's
lives.
- A cost to industry in terms of outstanding loans that go unpaid.
- And a cost to government in terms of debt collection and enforcement.
Debt Education wants to help build generations of empowered consumers
who can manage their finances effectively. Who understand why
it is important for them to become master of their debts, and
how they might achieve that goal. Who can make appropriate decisions
about their finances and understand what choices are open to them,
and the implications of those choices.
Ultimately, you have the responsibility of manging your own finances.
Looking at the big picture, we need to better understand why people
get into to debt, how much debt they get into, the impact it has
on thier lives and how they achieve debt relief.
Helping Make America Financially Strong
Debt Education was created to ensure that consumers have the basic
literacy and number skills they need to access information and
financial advice. America needs to be financially literate. Debt
Education wants to ensure that appropriate information on financial
management and financial services are available to everyone. Helping
you to make informed judgments and effective decisions about the
use and management of money in your life.
Debt Education also has a role to play in dealing with over-indebtedness.
We need to ensure that all consumers have access to debt relief
advice and debt management programs when they need it.
Millions of American adults have financial literacy skills below
those expected of an average 11 year old. Even more have problems
doing simple math. Research shows that adults with the poorest
skills are least likely to have savings and investments, and are
more likely to admit being in debt.
American needs to change its paradime and educate consumers to
make informed judgments and effective decisions about the use
and management of money. To ensure that consumers have the basic
financial literacy and math skills they need to access information
and advice. And most importantly American need to know the debt
help options available to them.
And, even Americans who do have decent math skills need to know
how the advice might help them. They may think that financial
advice is for rich people or a means for high-pressure selling.
They may be baffled by financial services. Thus, our mission is
to keep working to improve financial literacy, and to ensure that
consumers have the information that they need to make informed
financial decisions.
