REAL PEOPLE ... CARING ABOUT REAL
ISSUES
The Initiatives
In support of our educational mission, the Debt Education resource
has established initiatives that serve as both the justification,
focus and basis for all our activities in realtion to its application
to the lives of Americans.
The initiatives of the Debt Education are:
1. To empower Americans to live thier lives
through the prudent and informed management of their financial
resources.
We're committed to educating the public about personal financial
management, providing a knowledge base that emphasizes the importance
of:
- Assessing your financial circumstances
- Establishing financial objectives in support of your goals
- Developing a plan of action to meet your goals
- Putting the plan in action
- Periodically reviewing and adjusting plan as appropriate
- Measuring progress toward your goals over time
As the goal is success, your financial education should easily
how financial choices and decisions impact the attainment of your
goals. You should know how to find and evaluate professional advisors
and information sources.
2. To urge all Americans to save their money
and budget wisely towards the realization of their financial goals
and their future financial security.
That's why we want to education and motivation non-savers, as
well as provide information and encouragement of those who are
already working on their financial management goals.
3. To assist you in understanding and active
participation in the management of your investments.
4. To better prepare America for their retirement
years.
Such preparation should take into account the current trend toward
younger, longer living, more active retirees and the unique needs
they face. We'd also like to address the challenges faced by the
underprivileged and other at-risk individuals (including low-income
workers, women and minority groups) to secure a comfortable retirement
for themselves by helping them to understand planning and saving
for the future.
5. We want to encourage the youth of America
to understand their personal financial plans and sound money management.
We believe that competence to manage your finances results when
you develop a take-charge attitudes toward money. Providing basic
financial planning education to young people today will help to
create a population of more fiscally responsible and self-reliant
adults tomorrow.
6. To assist in the financial education of individuals
who find themselves in special circumstances, support the development
and delivery of programs and materials related to their unique
needs.
Special circumstances can happen to anyone. Issues such as limited
financial resources, language barriers, low-literacy levels, and
the lack of access to technology often pose additional barriers
in accessing whatever material might be helpful in overcoming
a unique financial challenge. We've identified those whose needs
might be served through a special personal finance education.
- The newly "unmarried" (widowed, and divorced individuals,
particularly women).
- Those transitioning from welfare to the workplace
- Single parents
- Disabled individuals
- Immigrant and minority populations
- Institutionalized populations (e.g., residents of substance
abuse centers and half-way houses, prisoners transitioning into
society, etc.)
